What is the difference between Column Chart and Bar Chart?
chartsHi there,
Let me tell you an incident today. This dates back to the time when I had been to an interview to 'xyz' company today and I found that a few candidates who came for the interview were discussing about charts. I thought "Oh! there is certainly a question about charts today!"
Might be an interviewer would have asked one of them, I believe. They were discussing:
What is a Column Chart?
What is a Bar Chart? and
How do you differentiate Column Chart and Bar Chart? and ...
...
I felt this was an interesting question and I recalled my answer pictorically in mind. Then, It was my turn to go in. Office Boy came and called my name Abhilash (usually in the court they call 3 times but here in interview only once ). I went in keeping my answer in mind for the above question, recalling it multiple times.
I got done with the interview and guess what? The interviewer asked me the chart question! I got a similar feeling as the great guy who wrote these lines, “ When I just started getting the answers to questions in life, god changed the question paper! “
My interview is done and now tell me whether the interviewer asked this question or not.
Send your option by typing "YES" to nourgent@yahoo.com or type "NO" to nourgent@yahoo.com . Your gifts are awaiting.
Are you still waiting for the answer then its "NO". When we prepare for some thing those will not be asked by the interviewers in most cases. Any how, the answer to the heading is as follows:
Column chart, as the name indicates is a chart in which data is represented in terms of columns.
Bar Chart is a chart in which the data is represented in terms of horizontal bars.
So, how do you think it will make a difference if you represent something in a horizontal fashion or vertical fashion?
However,
- First factor is of course visual appearance, how your management likes it, what appeals more to you.
- If you want to show trend lines in your chart , then go for column chart as it gives a better understanding of the trend
- Bar chart is preferable when you have large number of data to show.
Above all, One disadvantage in Bar chart is that it is difficult to understand forecasting and trendlines However, in Column Chart we can understand the charting presentation.
